  • Cost of co-locating in the UK?

I'm considered co-locating my next server. I currently pay around £100 for a Core2Quad Q9400 2.66GHz with 8GB ram and 150gb WD VelociRaptor (and cpanel) and have self managed this for a few years.

Is it worth me buying my own server and co-locating instead? I want an SSD in my next server and the cost is just prohibitive from my current suppliers (almost double the current cost!) hence me thinking co locating might be the way to go.

How much would a server with the above spec cost me? (And any recommendations?)
Also, will rapidswitch's co-location service of £40 a month suffice? Are there better datacenters? I'm in Cardiff so anything along the M4 corridor should be fine (are there any decent DCs closer?).

Your thoughts on the matter greatly appreciated!

Have you considered how much its going to cost you in engineer time etc if your server dies and needs hardware changing? At least with a dedi this isn't an expense you need to consider.

I'd look at providers in the BlueSquare Maidenhead campus rather than RapidSwitch personally (although I'm slightly biased in that respect ).

If you are just cost conscious, then I'm not sure you'll find anyone to beat the RapidSwitch pricing, but you'll likely get much better service from companies in BlueSquare who aren't solely driven by pricing.

I've been running dedicated servers for over 6 years, and in that time just one needed a chasis change, and another needed ram being replaced. I think bearing in mind that neither of those were brand new servers that's not too bad a failure rate.

Perhaps if I went with a Dell and their Next Business Day On-Site Service I wouldn't need to worry so much?

I guess it's something I'll have to think about while considering everything else.

        Why BlueSquare?

Regards to cost, well I don't want to be peying more than I am on the rented server - and hope by year two I will end up saving on monthly out-goings. So my budget is probably around £1,000 on the server (including next day warranty service) and between £40 and £50 on co-locating costs - is that reasonable?

          Dedicated server: £100pm = £1,200 x 3 years = £3,600
          Co-location: £40pm = £480 x 3 years + £1,000 initial server cost = £2,440
          Saving £1160 over 3 years.

Is that realistic or am I dreaming

Colo generally starts from £50 for ~0.5a, but it depends on the spec of the machine you're going to be colocating. As far as I know Rapidswitch colo for £40 comes with 0.4a.

a.) If you shopped around you could get your current spec dedicated server for less, I'm sure!
b.) You've only factored in replacement hardware costs but seem to have forgotten to factor in engineer time (whether it be to escort your Dell engineer onsite or to install parts you've kept in stock)
c.) Make sure you search around for reviews before you choose on your hosting partner as I would be surprised if you didn't change hosts if you did

Well there are plenty of companies that operate out of BlueSquare, so lots of competition. BlueSquare themselves don't do co-location or servers like RapidSwitch do.

One thing to be prepared for with RapidSwitch is that you will pay for every little thing. The title price might be low, but if you need *anything* else, then it will cost you.

Depends on how much power and data transfer you need really.

                  As a cost-saving excercise, no.
As a "get what you want server exercise", probably.

If you're sure you want to try colo, then I recommend you check out HNS.net who are based in Bristol so just around the corner for you. Tell them Suhail from DataRepublic recommended them to you as we have some customers using HNS for colo.

Trust me you don't want to do a 300 mile round trip on Sat 6pm when your KVMOIP isn't working or you get a kernel panic which may require some considerable troubleshooting time. You may end up losing £100/month in lost customers due to the hassle in troubleshooting a colo'd server in which case a server rental may well be worth it.

Unless of course you find a colo provider who will go all the way in trouble-shooting problems for you without extortionate hourly rates and willing to throw in spare parts at cost(where reasonably stocked) to save your online business.
