Anyone co-locating raspberry pis? Just a thought as what I need isn't very hungry.

In my opinion co-locating an rpi is a bit of a waste. Do you really need physical hardware for your project? They're great for certain things e.g. environmental monitoring/control but given the cost of the USB port to power it, the switch port it's taking up plus the problem of OOB access wouldn't a virtual machine give you a lot more bang for your buck?

Depends, I'm looking at disk space, most VPS offerings have limited space, say £8/month for 20G, on average. If I can get more on an SD card for less, then it would make more sense for what I'm doing to run from raspberries.

Check out EDIS, I believe they still do free RPi colocation in Austria. There's also a Netherlands based company that does it for a very low amount, the name escapes me now though.

Out of interest, are you able to share what you're working on?

Understand totally if you'd rather not, just asking as the Raspberry Pi units are something one of our folks is rather fond of (we've even been persuaded to trial them in the DC for monitoring and console access).

They're very smart - I'm personally just not convinced that anyone has found "THE" killer application yet though (aside from education that is and perhaps media playing). This will no doubt change as ARM kit becomes more prevalent and people look for low cost development platforms. (for example InterWorx have already ported to ARM, and are using RPi as a development platform with the end target being scale-out systems like those sold by Calxeda.)

We have been toying with the idea of doing colo for them lately, but just as others have mentioned, struggled to work out specific applications where users would rather these over a VPS.

Other than proof-of-concept and 'live testing' of what they'll be like at remote locations, unless you're also colocating some additional devices with them I see no real benefit over a VPS.

It's an issue of 'suitability' - rPis _can_ be a nightmare at boot time, and although serial-over-ip is possible, you cant push a new OS to it over serial, plus SDcards are 'fragile' with short life expectancy - try running bitcoind on it - you'll kill a class-10 sd card before the blockchain is completely downloaded...

                  What a novel idea.

I've often thought there was a gap in the market for large storage applications (i.e you want to backup a >60GB) but don't want to have the NSA reading it or care to pay a fortune to be on a all singing all dancing VPS.

Passive cooling, very low power, <Sarcasm> could easily squeeze 500 into a rack </sarcasm>

But hosting for free!, this seems a bit mad to me ;-)

<tin foil hat>If you don't want the NSA reading your data I wouldn't advise using an SD card in that RPi </tin foil hat>
